What is eczema?

Also called dermatitis, eczema is a noncontagious skin inflammation that produces itchy, red, rashlike areas. These occur on the face, scalp, wrists, and hands, as well as at the crease of the elbows, in back of the knees and sometimes elsewhere on the body. The word eczema means "boiled" in Greek, because in its early stages, the skin does indeed have a bubbly appearance. Eczema can spread or worsen if you scratch the affected areas. And persistent scratching or rubbing can bring on chronic eczema, with its distinctive dark, thickened, scaly red patches.

Most causes of eczema is unknown. Food allergies play a large part in most instances. Frequently eggs, wheat cereals, milk and certain fruits or berries. Lack of sunshine, fresh air, and constipation may be contributing factors.

There are different types of eczema, some classified by causes, others by specific symptoms. Atopic dermatitis is marked by a hypersensitivity, or allergy, to a food, inhalant, or other common substance that doesn't bother most people. It tends to be genetically linked, affecting individuals with a family history of hay fever, asthma, or eczema. Flaking and scaling on the face and scalp are typical of seborrheic dermatitis, while contact dermatitis produces an acute local rash after someone sensitive to it comes in contact with an irritant (say, the nickel in jewelry or the oil on a poison ivy leaf).

Many cases of eczema respond to soothing moisturizersand various nutrients, but sometimes secondary bacterial infections can invade the irritated skin, and these may have to be treated with prescription antibiotics. A separate type of eczema, stasis dermatitis, affects the lower legs and ankles and is associated with insufficient circulation of blood in those areas.

Symptoms of eczema?

Eczema may occur at any age but most frequently in infants. Most commonly on the face, but can appear on other parts of the body. It causes severe itching, burning, and stinging of the skin. Sometimes it begins with pimple like rash which develops into larger blisters filled with water. Usually the skin dries up and forms little scales that itch intensely. There are two kinds of eczema, dry and moist or weeping eczema. Both forms are usually worse during the winter months.

Worked for my son when nothing else did 01/08/2006 April 24, 2012

My 5 year old has had various outbreaks of eczema over the years. The last was the worst, with raw spots behind his ears. We tried prescriptions and even herbal creams, etc...nothing helped. A lady at our local organic store recommended this soap - we tried it and very quickly the eczema cleared up and was gone. We now use no other soap on him - including for his hair and he has been 100% breakout free ever since. It also rinses out of his hair very easily which is good as he doesn't like getting his hair rinsed.

I had developed psorasis (mild) on the toes and a finger. The soap really helped in soothing the itchness as well as reduced the reddness and the rash on the skin . Would definitly recommend to use for people with sensitive skin.

Soothing relief for eczema 11/20/2006 April 24, 2012
Reviewer: Renee Kohn from Miami Beach, FL US
Eczema seems to run in my family and I have suffered from itchy, scaly, burning rashes my whole life. My children also have eczema and for many reasons I would not use any of the drugs or creams that are commonly prescribed for eczema. Black seed oil helps dramatically but I was hoping to find a soap that would not irritate the itchy, burning rash. Sweet Sunnah Black Seed Eczema care soap soothes so well that I could not believe it the first time I used it!! Not only does this soap soothe the rash but I could see an immediate healing effect on my own skin and my children's skin also. The soap worked so well, that the first day after I used it, I cut the bar in half for a neighbor whose baby also suffers from eczema because I did not want the baby to suffer until his mother could order this soothing soap.

A blessing in a soap 02/14/2007 April 24, 2012

Salaam, I ordered this soap for my daughter who has eczema. Her Docter had prescribed Elidel, a presciption ointment for eczema. The product information on Elidel I obtained from the web, caused me great concern. I used the Elidel, while looking for a safer, gentler product and ordered this soap from your site. She has been using it for 2 weeks now and does not itch excessively ( as she had been ) and the eczema patches appear smooth and soothed. I have ceased the use of the Elidel for the time being and feel very pleased about this product and it's safety. As a parent, you want the products you give your kids to be effective AND safe, this soap is a winner on both counts. Thank You and continued success with "Black Seed."

Great Product 11/01/2008 April 24, 2012
Reviewer: A Viewer from Richmond, VA US
I purchased this product for my nephew. He has had eczema since he was born. He recently turned 2 years old and although the doctors claim it goes away after a certain age, his was getting worse. My sister hates the prescription and medicated creams the doctor recommends and the side effects are scary. My sister began using the soap last month, and has seen a big difference. While he gets mild outbreaks, it is alot better. His skin is starting to clear as a result of using this product. He can finally sleep peacefully without the pain from his irritated skin.
